The “Contributor analytics” report is available at project level. It shows how the commits to a selected branch or tag are spread over time, in total and per author.
Report availability
The report is available to users who can download the project’s code: members with the “Planner” or “Reporter” role and above, including those who hold one of them in a parent group, and users of the “Auditor” type. In a public project the report is open to any visitor, including one who has not signed in, and in an internal project to any signed-in user.
The project must have a repository with at least one commit. Opening the report of a project with an empty repository redirects to the project page.
Turning the “Repository” or the “Analytics” feature off in the project settings closes the report and removes the “Contributor analytics” item from the “Analyze” menu.
Viewing the report
- In the top bar, select “Search or go to…” and pick the project.
- In the project menu, go to “Analyze” → “Contributor analytics”.
The report is also available at a direct address:
https://<HOST>/<GROUP>/<PROJECT>/-/graphs/<REF>The report opens on the default branch of the project, or on the branch selected in the project when you open it. To view another branch or tag, select it in the list above the chart. The “History” button next to the list opens the commit list of the selected branch or tag.
Commits chart
The “Commits to” chart holds one point per day from the first to the last of the loaded commits and shows how many commits were made on that day. The vertical axis is “Number of commits”. Pointing at the chart shows the date and the number of commits.
The caption above the chart reads “Excluding merge commits. Limited to 6,000 commits.”: the report loads the 6000 most recent commits of the selected branch or tag and skips merge commits. In a repository with more commits, the chart starts at the oldest of the loaded ones.
The slider under the chart narrows the period. The narrowed period applies to the contributor charts and to their commit counts as well.
Contributor charts
Under the “Commits to” chart, the report shows one chart per author, up to 100 authors, in decreasing order of commits. Each chart is headed by the author name and the line 128 commits (ivan.petrov@example.com), and plots the commits of that author by day on the same time axis as the “Commits to” chart.
An author is identified by the email address in the commits, ignoring case. Commits with the same address and different names appear under the name from the most recent of them, and commits of one person made with different addresses appear as separate authors. The report leaves the address unmatched against the user accounts of the installation.
How commits are counted
A commit belongs to the day of its commit date in the time zone recorded in the commit. A commit without a time zone is counted in UTC. The commit date is the date of the last change to the commit, so a rebased or amended commit belongs to the day of the rebase or the amend.
